· Highland Park News: Beach project a model in many ways, by Charles Berman, December 3, 2009: This article covered the recently completed stabilization project on a residential beach.  Highland Park City Engineer John Welch was quoted as saying “This is the Bentley of improvements that can be done on the lake shore.”

Illinois News

· Chicago’s North Shore experiences its fourth wettest spring on record in 2009, causing major bluff failures on over 28 properties.

· Illinois Department of Natural Resources Lifts Moratorium in 2007: In the summer of 2005, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources placed a moratorium on lakefront projects on Lake Michigan in order to review policies and guidelines.  Lifted in 2007, Shabica & Associates continues to work within the IDNR’s new guidelines to meet the needs of its clients on new lakefront projects on Lake Michigan.

Michigan News

· Judge rules Corps 30 percent liable for erosion ST. JOSEPH — “The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been found partially liable for the beach erosion suffered by nearly 40 Lake Michigan prop­erty owners in the Shoreham area.  Plaintiff John Ehret, who was also the lead attorney for the property owners, said U.S. Court of Federal Claims Judge Emily Hewitt has ruled the Corps 30 percent liable for erosion back to 1950 as well as into the future.” (Herald-Palladium, October 1, 2007)

· The Herald Palladium: The case of the disappearing beach, by Ray Gudas, January 20, 2003: “NEW BUFFALO -Residents of Warwick Shores, Sunset Shores, Forest Beach, Grand Beach and other lakefront communities south of New Buffalo have been battling beach erosion for years.”

· Stabilization of Ravines, Adjacent Beaches, and Bluffs on Lake Michigan: Written by Dr. Shabica, Dr. James Jennings, Maynard Riley and Jeff Boeckler, this paper was recently published in the Winter 2010 edition of Shore & Beach, the journal of the American Shore & Beach Preservation Association, Volume 78, No. 1. The Appendix is also available for review.

· Sustainable Great Lakes Beaches: The Illinois Experiment: Written by Dr. Shabica, this paper was recently published in the Summer 2008 edition of Shore & Beach, the journal of the American Shore & Beach Preservation Association, Volume 76, No. 3.

· Shoreline Erosion and Coastal Management:  Written by Dr. Shabica, this article appeared in the Soap-Box section of the December, 2004 issue of Sea Technology, the worldwide leader for marine business, science and engineering.

· Evolution and Performance of Groins on a Sediment Starved Coast: Co-authored by Dr. Shabica, this important paper was published by the Journal of Coastal Research, Special Issue No. 33, 2004

Awards

· Sunrise Beach Park wins Top Restored Beach Award for 2004:  American Shore & Beach Preservation Association selected Sunrise Beach Park (Lake Bluff, IL) as one of the Top Restored Beaches for 2004.  Designed and monitored by Shabica & Associates, Sunrise Beach Park is now a sustainable, public beach that is enjoyed by the entire area.
