This private residence suffered from a total loss of beach due to a large municipal structure north of the property. Updrift sand entrapment and decades of maintenance dredging (and offshore disposal) resulted in total loss of downdrift beaches for more than half a mile (0.8 km) south. An innovative solution was proposed by Shabica & Associates to satisfy the needs of the downdrift property owners. After wave and sediment transport analyses and historical review of site conditions were completed, construction of a short spur breakwater was completed in 2002. Per IDNR (Illinois Department of Natural Resources) guidelines, the system was overfilled with sand to assure that properties farther downdrift were not negatively impacted. With proper dune management and education, more endangered plant species like Marram and American Beach Grass can take hold. |
